Dahlias are one of my favourite perennial plants. They might actually be my favourite full stop. Vibrant colours, and an amazing plume lasting all the way through the late summer to early autumn. And if you look after them right, all the way through until the first frost!

How to Store Dahlias in the Winter
First you must lift the dahlias, this means digging out the perennial bulb in order to preserve it for planting in the spring. This is known as lifting. Lifting dahlias for winter storing is easy if you know how but a lot of people do not know how to do it.
- Dig around the dahlia, making sure not to damage the bulb
- Rinse off the soil
- Leave to dry
- Pack in a box and cover with compost
How to store Dahlia Bulbs?
This is where you leave the bulbs in a pot or a box, or a metal storage box with dry compost. The bulbs must be dry when you do this in order to lessen the probability of rot. Storing dahlias in pots over winter is also fine, make sure the earth you use to cover them is dry, and mostly free of pests.

Storing dahlias seems like a task that requires a lot of effort, but it is completely worth it for the amount of reward beautiful flowering Dahlias have on a garden and a home.
Storing Dahlia Tubers in Refrigerator?
You can store them in the fridge, but really there is not much need, there is a possibility they would get too cold and die. As well as taking up a lot of space in the refrigerator!
They could also be prone to dehydration and other diseases.
How do I store dahlia tubers?
Alternatively if you are still wondering. Sometimes you do not need to lift these beautiful plants at all. Many people achieve the best results simply by cutting the dahlia back as soon as the dahlia flowers start to look limp and lifeless, and then covering the base in a few inches of straw, or mushroom compost. This will act as an insulator from the elements, such as the snow and rain, and get you producing beautiful flowers for years to come!
Storing Dahlia tubers in Vermiculite
You can also insulate your flowers in vermiculite boxes, which are slight insulators and will make sure to protect your bulbs even if they are in a cold garage. There are a lot of choices for you to take on board, but choosing the one for you that works best will be the right choice in the end.
